Belt bags are the chic and trendy update to the classic fanny pack that broke out onto the scene back in the 80’s. I can’t lie, for a while I was a little on the fence when it came to belt bags. I’ve always been a pretty big fan of fanny packs but because I usually wear them across my chest rather than around my waist belt bags just didn’t really appeal to me. But after seeing them everywhere from runways to street style blogs I finally decided to see what the hype was all about and I’m so glad I did.
Belt bags started to pop up back in 2017, but it didn’t come into the mainstream until last year especially taking over the summer festival scene. And it’s no wonder because this hands-free bag is the perfect choice to bring to concerts, festivals or on vacation. When it comes to winter style, belt bags are a little harder to incorporate into your outfits thanks to our need for layers, but the truth is they can help bring shape to bulky knits and oversized jackets. I personally love wearing mine over my wool coat as a waist belt while running errands.
I picked this one up at Zara ($19.99 on sale) about a week ago. I love that this one has a small front zip for smaller items, and inside the main pocket it has a built in card holder to keep organized. It also came with a side strap to turn it into a crossbody, which a lot of belt bags come with giving it a bit of versatility on how I can wear it.
I personally was never able to get onto the micro bag trend because I’m forever carrying more than I need, like at least 3 lipsticks and 2 backup batteries. So there’s no denying that belt bags are a tough one to adjust for someone like me. Going too big with belt bags leads to overstuffing them causing the weight to drag them down so you want to carry as little as necessary with you. That’s why I love them for easy errand runs or my days off where I just need my phone, a lipstick and a few cards with me.
